Ten Thousand Villages (TTV) was established in 1946 and works with 20,000 artisans in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to bring you handmade jewelry, home decor, gifts, and more.
As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair-trade organizations, they build long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect. They emphasize the use of recycled or renewable natural materials and applying sustainable environmental practices. The empowerment of women and people who are often overlooked is centered in their work. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life. #LiveLifeFair
HMC is directly involved in the Ten Thousand Villages store in Alexandria, Virginia as board members and volunteers. In addition, every year in November, HMC holds an international craft fair and bake sale, featuring items from Ten Thousand Villages and homemade baked goods prepared by HMC congregants; proceeds from the bake sale benefit a local charity.
The Alexandria store was founded in 1994, and is one of many across North America affiliated with the Ten Thousand Villages parent organization. It sells merchandise and food produced by artisans and farmers who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. They are assured of fair wages and consistent, reliable purchases. Approximately 40 volunteers work in the store and serve on its board of directors.
