Cuento:

My father was diagnosed with leprosy and confined to a especial sanatorium for those with this illness. Leprosy was understood as public health calamity… and the government in order to protect the citizens wouldn’t allow anyone to enter these areas where they were isolated.

The children or parents with leprosy were left alone. Many of them on the streets. The Colombian Mennonite church had a boarding school  in the town of Cachipay where some of the children without the infection were accepted to study. I was one of them, and since I started there when I was nine (9) years old, I have been with the Mennonite Church, sometimes distant, and sometimes fully involved.

As you see, I got to the Mennonite church by accident, like the story. And I haven’t been able to stop.

The beginning of the Mennonite Church in Colombia was also a product of an emergency. In the 1940s, two missionaries that were supposed to go Paraguay, were forced to stay in Bogota for a month, since one of the them got sick with malaria.

During this time, the other missionary, Gerald Stucky, decided to explore the region and found about the critical situation of the these children. Stricken by this reality, Gerald asked his bosses that a new mission Latin America could be started in Colombia, with the goal of helping this children.

As you see, our church in Colombian started by accident!

In the last 60 years, Colombia has lived with an armed and social conflict. It has generated more than three hundred thousand (300.000) murders, thousands of disappeared people, kidnapped, and five million displaced people from their land due to violence and threats. The social fabric has been debilitated and broken. And we have an illegitimate state because government officials used their institution to ally with Paramilitaries in order to kill and displace communities to steal their land.

In addition, given to this social and political crisis of injustice, international drug mafias have taken over a big part of country, making this dynamic even more complicated. They bribe and manipulate government officials, army officials, and finance armed groups that deteriorate our society.

This is also an emergency, and if we take into account that these 60 years are also the same years of age of the Colombian Mennonite Church, and also the same as my age, I can say without fear to be wrong that we are children of the emergency.

And the world is in constant emergency… besides wars and famines, the planet is warmer and that 95% of the causes are human causes.

Emergency, ambiguity, and injustice are some of the most felt characteristics of life.

But God, in its infinitive, and sometimes incomprehensible wisdom, has placed us there in that emergency for one reason; something very special, which is to carry an important role in revealing the plan of peace that God has for Colombia and the world.

It is important in an state of emergency that we know what is happening and where we’re heading to. It is key to clear up our vision and reaffirmed our way.

In the passage of Matthew 16:1-4, Jesus invites us to be careful, to observe and interpret the signs of the historic times. Our role in these emergencies should be to search, interpret, and find the signs of the Kingdom of God in anywhere where they are, no matter how small they seemed to be. These signs are the ones that bring hope back to the people affected by emergencies. This exercise turns us into real guards of hope.

With the flag of hope in our hands, and faith in our hearts, we will move forward, and tear down the walls and frontiers of ideologies, injustices, and violence that have been built to separate and confront humanity.

So we become bridge builders of peace, which means bishops of peace.

In Colombia, the people are with high expectations,, because the national government and the guerrilla armed group FARC have started, for more than a ear, peace dialogues. It is a difficult process with lots of obstacles, because an armed conflict of such a scale cannot be solved in a quick way.

We know warriors can only reach the termination of a war, they can put a stop to the armed conflict, but the construction of peace is up to the civil society, where the Mennonite church and other denominations will have a crucial role.

They have decided to talk in the midst of war: War is the art of deception where the first victim is the truth, says a wise man.

In the midst of these manipulative deceptions, the enemies of peace, those who profit from war and disorder have designed strategies against the work that we as a church and from Sewing Seeds of Peace (our organization through which we work with in the Region of Montes de Maria) are developing with communities that are trying to return to their land and are seeking an integral and transformative reparation from the government.

An army colonel affirms that we are part of the guerrilla groups and that our work is meant to strengthen the presence of this armed group in the region.  In this way they discredit our process, discourage communities, and produce mistrust and failure.

They have arrested one of the community leaders and accused him of being a guerrilla member.  They have threatened the other community leaders as well. They threw out pamphlets signed by criminal bands that have no presence in the area, with death threats and condemning them.

It an emergency of high caliber, and the guards of hope and bridge builders should get together to seek the signs of hope in the midst of this situation.

I think that in this case, we should take the words of Joseph, in the passage of Genesis 50:20, when he says to his brothers: “You intended to harm me but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.”

I believe that is going to bring something positive from this situation, as he did in this passage. The movement led by the farmers in Montes de Maria and the work that we’re doing as a church is going to continue getting stronger.

Joseph’s brothers wanted to kill him, and when they saw him getting closer, they said: Let’s kill him and see what happens with his dreams”. But we know the end of the story, because dreams cannot be killed, and much less when they are aligned with the plan of God.

These dreams are like a seed, and every seed possess the secret to become a tree.

In order to make this plan of hope, justice, and peace to happen, we need to work with faith and be able to see the tree in the seed. Even more, that we can feel the taste of the flavor of the fruit from the tree, that hasn’t been born yet.

Que dios los bendiga.

God bless you.
